Understanding Network Devices

Big picture: how internet comes to our home or office
Before learning devices, see full flow.

Each device has its own role.
Let’s understand one by one.
What is a Modem?
Modem is the device that connects your network to the internet.
Internet from ISP does not come in simple form.
Modem converts internet signal into something our network understands.
Simple words:
Modem = door to the internet
Analogy
Modem is like post office that brings letters from outside city.
Without modem:
no internet
router is useless
What is a Router?
Router decides where data should go.
When internet comes inside, router:
sends data to correct device
handles WiFi
gives IP addresses
Simple job
Router = traffic police

Router makes sure data reaches correct device.
Switch vs Hub
Both are used inside local network.
Hub
Hub sends data to everyone.
PC1 → Hub → PC2
→ PC3
→ PC4
Problems:
slow
insecure
everyone gets everything
Switch
Switch knows who is who.
PC1 → Switch → PC2
Only target device gets data.
Modern networks use switch, not hub.
What is a Firewall?
Firewall is about security.
It checks:
what can come inside
what should be blocked
Firewall protects from:
hackers
unwanted traffic
bad requests
Analogy
Firewall = security gate

This is where security lives.
What is a Load Balancer?
When one server is not enough.
Many users → one server = crash
So we use multiple servers.
Load balancer:
receives traffic
distributes to many servers

Used in scalable systems.

Devices
Each device has one clear responsibility.
Why this matters for web developers
As a web developer:
frontend talks to backend
backend runs on servers
servers sit behind firewalls
traffic comes through routers and load balancers
Understanding network devices helps you:
debug issues
understand deployment
talk confidently in interviews
Short Summary
Modem connects your network to internet
Router directs traffic to correct device
Switch sends data only where needed
Hub sends data to everyone (old)
Firewall protects the network
Load balancer distributes traffic
Think like this:
Internet → Control → Security → Distribution
